Type Certification is one of the most challenging aspects of achieving approval to perform commercial package delivery flights using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).
The process of Type Certification under FAA 14 CFR Part 21 should now be applied to UAS weighing 55 lbs or more and small UAS operating outside the limitations imposed by part 107.
Type Certification for UAS falls under the certification procedure for special classes of aircraft 21.17(b), which means that an airworthiness standard has not been issued so the actual requirement will be portions of existing standards.
This new process of Type Certification is called Durability and Reliability (D&R), which includes 4 key parts:
- D&R demonstration
- Likely failure demonstration tests
- Specific demonstration tests
- Design requirements
